Chinese New Year 2018
As we approach the festivities of the Chinese New Year, the industry unveils its homage to the Eastern Asian celebration by incorporating Chinese patterns, motifs, and symbols. Embarking into the Year of the Dog, the eleventh zodiac sign, the astrological symbol represents loyalty, courage, harmony, and decisiveness. Brands are enjoying the opportunity of employing their own interpretation and creating a dedicated design for the joyous occasion. Joining in on the fun, luxury horology brands such as Panerai, Ulysse Nardin and Chopard have saluted the Chinese celebration with their customized contributions to the watch industry.
Starting off with Panerai, the luxury Italian watchmaker launched its 88 pieces commemorating man’s best friend. Using a scrupulous technique called Sparsello, the 44m engraved steel lid features inlays of gold threads producing an image of a dog surrounded by Chinese floral motif. The grooved lid then opens up to showcase the classic Panerai luminor grey dial and linear hour markers and is fitted with a date window and small off-center second hand. A P.9000 automatic calibre, the movement presents a 72 hour power reserve and is water resistant to 100m. The limited edition Luminor 1950 Sealand 3 Days Automatic Acciaio hosts a soft brown leather strap matching the intricate artistry displayed on the lid.
Ulysse Nardin rings in the New Year with a new oriental addition in their Classico Collection. Exhibiting beautiful craftsmanship, quintessential Ulysse Nardin, the Classico Dog bears an animated illustration of the four legged animal in the great outdoors with a backdrop of Chinese archetypal rooftops in blue and brown hues. The dial is primarily carved through the Champlevé technique, applying a chisel directly on the miniature surface to create the dynamic drawing, multiple dimensions, and metallic detailing. Then, the craftsman uses the meticulous Grand Feu technique, an ancient enameling method, by utilizing intense fire to heat the enamel and spread unto the dial. Also limited to 88 pieces, UN-815 self-winding movement is encased in 18-karat gold 40mm case and boasts a 42 hour power reserve. The luxurious watch is water resistant up to 50m and hosts a blue alligator strap.
Impeccably detailed, Chopard’s contribution this year seamlessly combines the Chinese astrological repertoire, creativity, and watchcraft into an iconic timepiece titled L.U.C XP Urushi. Featuring the Asian canine, the Akita dog is surrounded by vibrant elements of nature, flora, and a colorful fluttering dragonfly. Mastering the ancestral Japanese lacquer technique and blending it with hand paint and other traditional materials, the image is augmented by the various shades, colors, and miniature components that bring the scene to life. A masterpiece in its own right, the miniscule artwork is finalized with the rose gold encasement and geometric hands. The 39.5mm tribute luxury watch is powered with a self-winding L.U.C. 96.17-L movement and a 65-hour power reserve.
Limited to 88 pieces, the design is sealed with an elegant black alligator strap that balances the background in the dial.
Notable contributions from the watch industry, the brands have successfully blended traditional Chinese design with modern horology to develop limited edition wearable art. The aforementioned pieces are a true testament to the innovation, ingenuity, skill, and heart the horology industry has.
