Elizabeth Doerr, who has dedicated most of her waking hours to mechanical watches since 1991, and is now the editor-in-chief of QuillAndPad.com, an innovative online magazine for watchmaking and related luxury topics, which she co-founded with Ian Skellern in 2013.
She is also a member of the prestigious Cultural Committee of the FHH (Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie) as well as a jury member of the 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 editions of watchmaking’s “Oscars”: the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (http://www.gphg.org).
After co-authoring Elite Timepieces in 2008, Doerr authored 12 Faces of Time, an artistic look at independent watchmaking, which was published by teNeues in February 2010. Her book Bridging Art and Mechanics: The Unabridged Story of the Corum Golden Bridge was published in 2015.
More than twenty years in watch publishing began for Elizabeth in 1991, who became known in English-speaking countries as the senior editor of Wristwatch Annual for 12 years.
This Germany-based ex-pat with an optimistic American attitude has been a sought-after contributor to a variety of publications, including (but not restricted to) Forbes.com (http://www.forbes.com/sites/elizabethdoerr/), the upcoming Esquire Big Watch Book, International Watch, QP, Revolution, DuPont Registry, Hagerty Classic Car, Elite Traveler, design magazine Surface, Cellini’s Status and other U.S. publications as well as internationally based publications such as thewatchestv.com, Plaza Watch, Baselworld Daily News and Baselworld Brand Book, Hour Glass Magazine, and Deluxe Swiss Made. Doerr, who was the English content editor for Swiss watch website www.worldtempus.com from 2009 until January 2013, was also senior editor of Wristwatch Annual, a yearly 456-page overview of high-end mechanical watches, from its inception in 1998 until the 2010 issue. This native of Petoskey, Michigan, specializes in complicated, high-end mechanical watches and technical articles such as factory reviews. Friendly, long-standing relations to the European watchmaking scene make her a valuable member of these publications’ editorial teams.
Doerr’s independent expertise and standing in this field are unique, thus making her an oft-consulted and -quoted expert in international newspapers such as the International Herald Tribune, the New York Times, and even GQ Japan. She is a member of several international juries including those of Tiempo de Relojes’ SIAR, the Revolution Awards, Watchstars put on by Chronos (Germany) and WatchTime (USA), the Time Aeon Foundation’s Pleiad Competition (initiated by Harry Winston), the GTE Superwatch Award, and Chronos24.pl’s Watch of the Year.
Doerr moved to Germany in 1988 to pursue graduate studies in German language and literature after graduating from Kalamazoo College with a liberal arts bachelor’s degree in German and European Studies in 1984. She now lives on the northern edge of Germany’s Black Forest.
